The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has released the official grant payment schedule for June 2025, covering the Old Age, Disability, and Childcare grants. Each type of grant will be paid on separate days to make the process smoother for beneficiaries. SASSA encourages beneficiaries to take note of their specific payment dates to avoid confusion or unnecessary travel.
In addition to the payment schedule, SASSA has issued a warning about a fake job advertisement doing the rounds on social media. The ad falsely claims that the agency is hiring a grant administrator with a high monthly salary. SASSA has made it clear that any legitimate job openings will only be posted on their official website.
The Department of Social Development (DSD) has also addressed public questions about increasing the old-age pension to R5000. The DSD explained that such an increase isn’t possible due to current government budget constraints. With over 19 million South Africans receiving social grants and a total budget of R284.7 billion for the 2025/26 financial year, raising the pension amount significantly would not be financially viable.
June 2025 SASSA Grant Payment Dates
SASSA has confirmed the dates on which different types of grants will be paid in June 2025. Beneficiaries are advised to plan ahead and collect their grants according to the schedule below:
Grant Type | Payment Date |
---|---|
Old Age Grant | Tuesday, 3 June 2025 |
Disability Grant | Wednesday, 4 June 2025 |
Childcare Grant | Thursday, 5 June 2025 |
Note: Payments are made in stages to avoid long queues and overcrowding at payout points.
Beware of Fake SASSA Job Postings
SASSA has alerted the public about a fake job advert currently circulating online. The misleading advertisement falsely claims that the agency is hiring a “grant administrator” with a monthly salary of R21,234.
SASSA strongly advises people to ignore such scams and only trust information published on their official website. This reminder comes as part of their ongoing efforts to protect South Africans from fraud and misinformation.
Why Increasing the SASSA Pension to R5000 Isn’t Feasible
There has been public demand to increase the SASSA pension to R5000, driven by a petition submitted by Riyad Isaacs, leader of United South Africa (USA). In a letter addressed to the Ministers of Social Development and Finance, Isaacs outlined the financial difficulties faced by pensioners and urged the government to review the current grant amounts.
The Department of Social Development (DSD), however, responded that such an increase is not financially possible at this time. Currently, about 19 million people in South Africa receive social grants, with R284.7 billion budgeted for the 2025/26 financial year. Out of these, 4.1 million are elderly citizens receiving either R2,315 (ages 60–74) or R2,330 (75 and above) per month.
If the pension were raised to R5000 per person, the government would need nearly R246 billion just for pensioners alone—excluding all other grant beneficiaries. As a result, the DSD confirmed that the increase is not affordable within the current budget.
